Westminster Apartments

This building is a well-maintained example of an elegant pre-First World War apartment building. It was designed in the Edwardian style and used fancy, decorative red brick work such as raised courses running horizontally along the façade. It also included corbelling that encircles the building and an elevated parapet. Stone was used to add details like the chevrons around the doors and at the corners, and as a cap for building.

One of the first apartment buildings in Edmonton, this three storey, twenty-four suite residence is associated with the economic boom that occurred prior to the First World War. Built in 1912 by Western Canada Properties Ltd., the Westminster Apartments are located close to downtown at 114 Street and 100 Avenue. The location was a desirable address that attracted white-collar workers and prominent Edmontonians, including the former Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, the Hon. George Bulyea.
